Parts And Fundamentals Of A Vision Tester

By Tracie Knight

Vision or sight testers are apparatus used to test various properties in the eye. Eye testing can be done voluntarily by people who feel that they need it done, or it may be a mandatory exercise. It becomes mandatory when the profession or job one needs requires them to have a good vision. Such jobs may include being a pilot, public driver, doctor, and military personnel. A vision tester may be used at the time one applies for the job or occasionally after some time or both.

Modern apparatus are made in a wide range of designs, colors, and shapes. The many international producers have resulted in numerous designs and makes. Latest makes have many helpful features that render them more convenient and easier to utilize. Complexity ranges from primary designs to room-sized versions that can occupy a whole room.

Latest models of sight testers can work under different conditions. Some of the major conditions include near, distance, nighttime, daytime, monocular, and binocular. The incorporated light emitting diodes serve as a source of light whenever there is need. Major physical components on the device include handle, base, controls, eyepiece, and body. Each part has its own purpose on the gadget. For instance, the base provides firm support when the device is resting on a bench.

The body of the tester works as the housing for all circuitry the device contains. The body is mostly made from plastic although other materials can also be used. The handle provides easy support when moving the gadget from one place to another. One hand should hold the handle and the other one the base when carrying. Storage should be done in well insulated materials away from direct sunlight, water or moisture.

Vision testing devices can test a lot of eye conditions including visual acuity, long and near sightedness, depth perception, color perception, peripheral view, and lateral phorias. In short sighted people, the eyes are unable to see words at close range. The device places letters at varying virtual distances from individuals under analysis. The person is required to look through the eyepiece and report what they are able to see.

Testing of color is mostly focused on 2 or 3 key colors and resulting shades. Text gets placed against diverse backgrounds, mainly gray, green, red, or the resulting shades. Individuals under test are required to state its color or read it. At times the words or letters is provided in different color shades. Long sightedness test entails placing letters on differently-colored backgrounds. The sharpness should appear similar regardless of background. Long sightedness happens when one observes a change in the brightness and/or sharpness with changes in the backgrounds.

Peripheral sight is the ability of one to see things on the sides when their eye is focused in front. The testing device is able to shift the position of the text one is required to read to different angles of the eye. There are standards in place that guide all the tests that are tested.

The complexity and presence of additional features on a tester are the key determinants of its price. Simple makes cost not over a few dollars whilst sophisticated models can go as far as several thousand dollars. The wide collection of makes accommodates individuals with various financial abilities.
